Runner approaching control Welcome to the Orienteering New Brunswick website, which describes orienteering activities in and around the province of New Brunswick in eastern Canada. ONB has active groups in Fredericton, Moncton, and Saint John.

What is Orienteering?
The 20 second answer is: it is a sport that involves finding your way around the countryside with the aid of a map, showing control points to be visited, and a compass. Think of it as a car rally on foot. The person who finds all the control points in the shortest time wins.
How do I begin?
Come to the next event in your area. See the event list elsewhere on this page. Contact the representative nearest you for more details, directions, encouragement.

  • In Moncton: Harold McQuade 506 852-3903 email (personne résourse française)
  • In Saint John: Steve Heron 506 849-1855 email
What do I need?
Running shoes or light hiking boots, a whistle (available at events for $2), and a simple compass (usually available for rental at events).
Who can do it?
Anybody - from 8 to 80. All ONB events include courses to suit participants of different skill and fitness levels from beginner to advanced. Children younger than 8 are welcome, but should be accompanied on their course by an adult.
How do I learn to do it?
Come to an event! An organizer will be happy to give you some pointers before you attempt an easy course. Do start with an easy course - it is much more fun when you finish having found all the control points.
If you want to investigate a bit more, take a look at our tutorial pages.
