Meet director/course-setter: Paul Looker

The participants of this event were treated to another nice day of orienteering in the Park. This is almost becoming par for the course in the Port City which is more renowned for its cooler, damp and foggy weather. The sky was variable but overall it was ideal for a day spent walking and running in the woods. There was almost an equal number of participants in the 2-hour and 4-hour events , but contrary to what one would normally see, the 2-hour event actually drew slightly more participants.

The 2-hour event saw Cheryl Smith of Cape Breton , NS taking top spot with a perfect score of 300 points. 2nd Place went to Mark Stanford of Quispamsis , NB with 280 points (including 50 point bonus for an early finish). 3rd place went to Andrew and Steve Heron also from the Saint John , NB area.

In the 4-hour event an error in marking the control location (Control #2) on the map created some frustration for some participants. The late night transcription from working map to event map and trying to re-learn the Condes program are all simple excuses to shift the blame for this mistake but , unfortunately , the blame lies directly in my trying to put everything together at the last minute. Simply, by reviewing, or using the competition map to put out the controls, I could have avoided this problem. But , despite this gaffe, everyone seemed to have fun. And the orienteers all showed their gracious nature in not complaining too much about the mishap. The rest of the course proved both interesting and challenging to those who visited the far corners of the park.

In first place was Ashley Harding of Nova Scotia who used the bonus points earned by finishing early to attain a total of 540 points. Figuring out the riddle of the misplaced control circle was David Ross of Moncton, NB who cleared the course with 6 and a half minutes to spare and ended up with 520 points. And in third place with 450 points , from Fredericton , NB was Robert Hughes.

Below you will find the results for all participants.
